Check out this month's parent newsletter for Family Weekend details and move-in day highlights!
September 2017
Greetings !

Hello from a campus of full of activity! Since your student arrived on campus, whether a first-time freshman or a returning student, there has been a lot of activity. In this newsletter, I want to provide you a snapshot of some of the activities and events that have been occurring since that first move-in day.

We trust and believe if your student will engage in some of the activities and events on our campus, they will have a more fulfilling and engaging college experience. As much as you might miss your student and wish them to be home, please encourage them to stay on campus for these first few weeks to participate in some of the fun campus activities and events.

Also, please mark your calendars to join us for the Family/Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 13-14. See greater details below.
Thanks for trusting us with your student!

New Student Move-in Day Highlights

It was great to have students return to AU! New relationships are already beginning to form for new students, while returning students have been reunited with the friends.

I hope you will take a moment to watch the new student move-in video to see the fun, the work, and the community coming together for a great start to the 2017-18 school year.
Family/Homecoming Weekend: Oct. 13-14
Although no place will ever replace the true home of our AU students with their families, for many months of the year, AU becomes their temporary home. Why not plan to come back to AU, to step into your student's world for a few days, all amidst many fun opportunities and events? Check out all the details of the weekend on the online schedule. You can register for Family Weekend online as well. We hope you plan to "Come Home" to AU on Oct. 13-14!
Four Ways to Participate in your Child's AU Experience
As a parent, it is natural to be interested in your student's life at college. Staying engaged can be difficult, but here are a few tips that can help you stay up to date on campus life.

1. Actively listen to your student's stories. Maggie Platt, Resident Director of Martin Hall, advises parents to "encourage your student to get involved right away, call, ask how they're doing, ask what they're involved in, and be interested in those kinds of things. Then, once they've got their feet under them, come to visit and see firsthand how your student is involved." She says this gives students a chance to grow on their own while knowing they have full support from back home.
2. Read the Andersonian online. The Andersonian is AU's student-run newspaper. It contains all the current news regarding life on campus and changes to the university. It also contains other interest pieces, including editorials, opinion pieces, and interviews with students and professors. While the Andersonian is a print paper that appears on campus, it also has an online version that parents to access. The Andersonian is the best way to hear students' thoughts about the campus, all collected in one convenient location.
3. Attend Family Weekend, October 13-14. Family Weekend is the perfect time for parents and families to come to campus. It is a weekend full of events that families to participate in together. You can view the online schedule and register online today! Maggie Platt is enthusiastic about Family Weekend this fall, saying "The Department of Student Life wants to invite families to see one of the best weekends on campus."
4. Read the Parent Connection Newsletter. Congratulations! You are already reading this newsletter, which is a great way to show interest in your student's campus experience. This is a good place to find important information collected to keep you up to date on campus happenings. You can also find past newsletters or encourage a relative to subscribe to the newsletter on the AU website. [Written by Abby Johnson, AU Student]
