Check out this month's newsletter to learn more about matching your student's passion with a major!
July 2017
Greetings !

I hope you have been having an enjoyable summer with your family, whether your student is at home with you or living away from home for an internship or another experience. I have both a son living at home, as well as a daughter living in Peru this summer for an immersive study abroad trip. I am trying to make the best of both extremes.

In this issue of the Parent Connection newsletter, I hope you'll enjoy some tips on how your student can match passion with choice of major. It is not rare at all for students to change their major (sometimes even more than once), and I think that a big part of the final decision is finding something that he or she is truly passionate about. If your student is still weighing the options in a choice of major, I hope that these tips can aid in making a final decision.

We also hope you can attend some upcoming events hosted by the Alumni Office. We are excited to spend some time with the AU family, and we would love for you to join us (and enjoy discounted ticket prices) at Kings Island this month and at Victory Field next month! You can reserve your ticket for one or both of these events using the forms linked below.

As the school year draws closer, I am praying that the rest of your summer will be fun and relaxing and that your student will be ready to start the school year fresh in August. We are so looking forward to having our students back on campus!

Blessings,

Brenda Bailey '13, MBA '16

  • On Saturday, July 29, we will host an AU Alumni Day at Kings Island in Mason, OH! Your reduced ticket price is just $35, with a free lunch and parking pass provided by the AU Alumni Office. Your ticket allows you to enjoy more than 100 world-class attractions including Soak City Waterpark, dazzling shows, and the award-winning Planet Snoopy. You can pick up tickets at the Center Field Gate on West and Maryland St.

We'd love to see you and your family at one or both of these AU Alumni events! The deadline to reserve tickets for either of these events is July 26. If you have any questions, please email us at alumni@anderson.edu
Three Tips on How to Match Student Passion with Major
College is a time for students to explore different fields and interests, and to discover what career they would like to have when they graduate. Sometimes, it requires some more experience and knowledge to help students discover their interests and passions. Here are several tips to help your student find a suitable major.
Encourage your student to interview someone before choosing a particular major. This tip would most likely work for those who enter AU undecided; having your student listen to an expert of a field they wish to pursue could help them decide whether or not they want to commit to it.
Don’t expect your student to know exactly what they want to do right out of high school. It is perfectly normal for a student to be undeclared early on and just focus on core classes if they’re uncertain about which route to go. You can always encourage your student to visit AU’s Center for Career and Calling for more help with choosing a major, an internship, or a career field.
Listen to what your student’s interests are and be encouraging of their choices. Whether this is brought on intentionally or unintentionally, some students feel that they need to follow in their parents’ footsteps while at college. If this is the case, let your student know that you will encourage them in any way you can, even if they choose a completely different career path from your own. Order your Student's 2017-2018 Parking Permit Today!
Did you know students can order their parking permit on the AU website? Any car parked on campus or adjacent streets must be registered with AU Security, and you can choose to apply for a permit online, where you can also check out the registration policies and details. If you order it in the weeks before your student comes to campus, it can even be mailed to your home! The permit can then be placed on the car before they ever come on campus, eliminating one item from the "to do" list during move in days! If you have questions, please contact Lori Anson at llanson@anderson.edu or 765-641-4154.
